Question by qattack08: How can I explain the difference between legal and illegal tips (men’s volleyball)?
How can I effectively explain and/or demonstrate what makes a tip legal or illegal, specifically in men’s volleyball? I have moved to the Philippines from the United States and while there are many decent players in my area, all of them throw the ball badly while tipping the majority of the time.

Thank you! More information follows, but it’s not so important…

*****

I have been playing volleyball for over 20 years now in the United States and reffing intermediate/competitive leagues for over 15 years.

I recently moved to the Philippines, and while there are some very good hitters [...did you know Filipinos invented the spike?], even the best players in my area throw the ball regularly while tipping.

How can I communicate the difference between a legal tip and a caught/thrown ball? I’ve never had much problem in the states, as there are enough players who execute tips legally and the know what they are doing. However, players here have no such role models. Also, there are very few refereed games here and the “refs” in my area act only as scorekeepers anyhow.

I am continually frustrated that the players here are very good at throwing the ball to the empty parts of the court and the defense cannot possibly anticipate where the ball is going.

The players here respect my decisions…if I say the ball was thrown, they don’t argue, but they will repeat the same action later, as they don’t understand why it was a throw. Also, I do not call many of their throws; if they played in recreational leagues I occaisonally ref back home, I would be calling them much more frequently (…due in large part to the fact that they are pretty decent players–if they can just eliminate their throws!).

Best answer:

Answer by Detroit Cutie
LOL This is so funny to me because I throw the ball so much. Sometimes I get lucky and the reff doesn’t see it but any who!!!

I would say try explaining to them that it is simply the flick of the wrist. Not a swing across your body to direct the ball, and no bending at the elbow. Tell them to think of it as a one hand block! Elbows locked and wrist pointed down and in the direction you want to ball. Hopefully they can find the in between the two you know?

Question by : Is This a good beginning?
Beginning:

“Anna, can we please not move? I don’t want to leave all my friend’s behind!” Pleaded Sydney. “Sydney, please try to understand. I’ve been working for eight hours straight daily and my boss still won’t give me a raise! We have no choice but to move to South Carolina until I find a better job.” Anna, Sydney’s legal guardian, said quietly, trying not to start a fight.

“Oh please! It’s like you don’t even care about me anymore!!” Yelled Sydney, raising her voice higher. “Sydney, our own parent’s got killed and left us nothing behind! We should be thankful Anna cared enough to adopt us!” Sydney’s brother, Trey, exclaimed.

“I know it’s been hard since our parent’s died but-” “THEY’RE NOT DEAD!” She screamed, waiting no longer to hold in the anger. “You know, they never wanted us! They were teenagers, Trey! Teenagers!!”

Sydney ran off feeling sorry for nobody but herself.

Do you think that’s good enough or does it need some fixing? I’ve only just started this story stuff so please give me some tips that I might need. Thank you.

Best answer:

Answer by Casey
Eh, it’s weak. Poor conversation, not realistic. Make a new paragraph when a different person speaks.

When someone yells, you don’t need to say they raised their voice higher. That’s what yelling is. And I kind of would enjoy it more if you set up the scene a bit.

Question by CONFUSED: Can employers take tip money from workers to pay for errors?
My employers keep track of discounts and coupons taken deducted from bills and if there isn’t a signature on them or if the number discounted is incorrect, they charge the employee the amount of the discount and refuse to provide receipts. They charged a coworker 66.00 for accrued discounts from two months ago and other employees an average of 10-15 dollars. They say we have to pay for the “discrepancies” but provide no proof of our paying for it and say if we do not pay we will get demoted or hours will be cut. They also make us “tip out” other employees 2% of our sales, but it is not stated in our sales reports, they just “tell” us how much to tip out, so there is no record of that money anywhere. Also, there were no written forms of consent to do either of these actions, they are just de facto. Is this at all legal and can people provide sources? BTW the place of employment is NJ

Best answer:

Answer by Jennifer
Does not sound legal to me. You all need to get together and talk to a lawyer. Makes me wonder if the employer is dipping into the tips and pocketing stuff for themselves.

I think it is fair that money comes out of your salaries if you screw up, but only if it had already been discussed prior to you being hired and if there is some paperwork.
